Class 1 - Miss Jackson
Welcome to Class 1
At St John's Chapel Primary School, our children in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are taught in Class 1. Our class teacher is Miss Jackson and Mrs Pitchford is our Higher-level Teaching Assistant.
In Class 1, we follow a weekly timetable that ensures we cover all aspects of the National Curriculum (For Key Stage 1) and Early Years Framework (for our EYFS pupils). We follow a ‘topic based’ approach which allows the children to make links with their learning across many curriculum subjects (such as History, Geography, Art and Design Technology). We have a daily phonics/spelling session, English lesson and maths lesson for all children in Reception and Key Stage 1. Children will receive a reading book that matches their ability. Children are encouraged to read at home as often as possible to help develop their reading fluency and understanding.
Each week, our EYFS children are introduced to a new ‘Book of the Week’ and ‘Rhyme of the Week’ and we take part in short carpet sessions based around these. They also take part in a daily ‘Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle’ session. This provides opportunities for the children to develop their communication & language and motor skills. The EYFS children have lots of fun exploring, choosing their own learning and playing together!
Our classroom has two main teaching areas that each have an interactive smart panel. This allows us to split our class up into smaller groups and provides quieter working spaces for when we are completing focused tasks or independent work. The main classroom is where the children can access the continuous provision. This includes a home corner (with role-play resources), a sand & water area, a small- world area, art & craft area, a malleable area, a construction area. We provide a range of different storybooks throughout the provision, that the children access both independently and with adults, to help promote a love for reading. We also have a den that provides a calm and quiet space for the children to access. Our provision is carefully considered so that it provides children with lots of opportunities to explore their curiosity and creativity, as well as develop their independence and a love for learning.
The children in Class 1 have access to their own outdoor area, named the ‘Class 1 Garden’ where we have additional outdoor provision (including outdoor sand & water provision, large construction & loose parts). We have a large outdoor shed that provides a sheltered outdoor learning space for both adult-led tasks and independent learning.
The children take part in a fortnightly Forest School session. Here, the children learn about nature and the world around them, develop their confidence, independence, their ability to take risks and learn to work as a team. Our PE days are Tuesday (fortnightly) and Friday (weekly).
Each child in Reception and Key Stage 1 has access to their own iPad, which they use daily to access educational applications, including Nessy, Doodle, Numbots, TTRockstars and Accelerated Reader.
Every Thursday and Friday, we are joined by our friends and teachers from Wearhead Primary School for Federation Days. On these days, the children take part in lessons that are better with a larger group of children (such as Science, PE, RE and Music).
